Solo Motorcycle camping adventure to Copper Canyon Mexico, Spring 03'
Final bike preparation for riding the Sportster to Mexico’s Copper Canyon, down one of the most extreme roads in the world.
I read once that the benefits of an adventure begin when the plan is put into action. Well the action really started a week ago. I dug my bike out of two inches of new snow in northern Wisconsin and prepared the gear to go in deep.
Ready to roll south- I decided to trailer it all the way to New Mexico because of the crappy weather this week. That’s OK, I like the idea of having my truck and trailer close to the border in case I have bike trouble and need to truck down into Mexico to retrieve it. BUT! that won't happen!
Cruising South.
This is not the toe vehicle I started with. I started out with an 88' blazer, rusted and noisy. Driving along I-80 just outside Omaha about 10:00 p.m. the truck started making a louder than normal wining sound, then BAM! I took inventory, I was alive and not injured but I no longer had a connection between my motor and the wheels. I was still moving along, it felt like an act of God, I kept moving about 30 MPH down the freeway for around a ½ mile. I made it to an exit ramp, blew two stop signs and wheeled around in front of a small Motel. I coasted onto the curb and that was it, the Blazer had had it. There is a large dirt parking lot next to the Motel so I had my toe service toe me about 50 yards to the lot. I thanked God and camped for the night.
I bummed out for a bit then decided to look for a truck in Omaha. Some dealership picked me up and drove me all over town looking at cheap trucks I could afford. Now I have a 95' Blazer, 140K miles but the nicest truck I have ever owned. Likin life.
Road Runner RV park, Demming NM. $5.00 / week to store the truck. Sweet!
I camped at Pancho Villa State park in Columbus, NM. 3 miles before the border. I crossed early with out a hitch. The only person crossing at the time. I had lunch in Casas Grandes. Super, but wasnt ready to call it quits. Took off for Medera for the first night.
Chillen in the foot hills toward Medera.
A nice Motel just before Medera, court yard for bike security, $45 / night. I almost took it but decided to check out the town first. This is where I ended up. A block off main street and close to some great food. $20 / night. great bike security.
Breakfast at Medera. This kitchen is attached to the Motel courtyard.
I broke a hose clamp that holds the backpack to my sissy bar. I had one spare but after the first day I was down to zero spares. In the middle of know where I see this building with "Ferritiria" on the side. I knew this meant hardware. Sweet, a guy came out from a house close to the building and sold me three clamps. I never broke another one but felt good to be ready.
